How to Knit Twist Headband for Beginners: A 1-Hour Knitting Project

twisted headband

Let’s be real: knitting with fur yarn for the first time is intimidating. You cast on, knit a few rows, and realize you can’t see a single stitch. It looks like a fuzzy cloud, and if you’re a beginner, that usually leads to a “how am I supposed to know where the needle goes?” panic.

I get it. But here’s the secret: fur yarn is actually quite forgiving yarn for beginners precisely because you can’t see the stitches. If you make a mistake, drop a stitch, or add an extra one by accident—nobody will ever know. Including you. This project is about feeling your knitting rather than seeing it.

Materials:

  1. Chunky Yarn: 50g of 5mm faux fur yarn (one standard ball). I uses similar to this: Niceec Faux Fur Yarn
  2. Needles: 8mm needles (I used my Addi Click interchangeable needles).
  3. Tapestry needle for sewing.
  4. Pattern: Garter stitch (knit every single row).
  5. Time: About 1 hour from start to finish.

Ear Warmer: How to Get the Right Fit

Don’t guess the length. Fur yarn is heavy, and it stretches. If you knit it to the exact size of your head, it will be sliding down your face by lunchtime.

The Math: Take your head circumference and subtract 8 cm.

  • My example: My head is 56 cm.
  • Calculation: 56cm – 8cm = 48cm.
  • Result: I knitted my piece until it was 48 cm long (un-stretched).

1. Casting On

Cast on 15 stitches using long-tail cast on.

Beginner Tip: Since you can’t see the “V” of the stitches, use your thumb to feel the gaps between the loops on your needle. That’s where your right needle needs to go.

2. Just Keep Knitting (Garter Stitch)

Knit every row. Don’t worry about row counts or looking for “knit” vs “purl” bumps. Just push your needle into the space that feels like a stitch and wrap your yarn.

  • Weight Check: This project uses exactly 50 grams of yarn. It’s light on the head but keeps your ears warm.

  • Width: With 15 stitches on 8mm needles, your headband should be about 12 cm wide.

3. Binding Off

When your piece reaches 48 cm (or your calculated length), bind off loosely.

4. Finish Seam

Fold the headband short sides and fold them inside each other. Take a tapestry needle and sew all 4 folded sides together. Because of the fur, your sewing doesn’t have to be pretty. In fact, it can be downright messy, and it will still look like a seamless, high-quality piece when you turn it right-side out.

The Perfect Last-Minute Gift Idea

Because this project only uses 50 grams of yarn and takes under an hour, it is officially the best last-minute DIY gift in your knitting repertoire.

Since the faux fur look is so high-end, it looks like a luxury store-bought accessory rather than a frantic “I forgot” project. Pair it with a cute tag and you have a thoughtful, handmade gift that actually gets used.
